Movement is Medicine

Our bodies were made to move, but we are more sedentary than ever before. At BioCharger, we often cite the statistic that 93% of our time is spent indoors, and Americans spend roughly 10 hours of that indoor time each day sitting! ⁣⁣⁣⁣

Sure, advancements in technology have provided access to more information and have encouraged connectedness in a way we’ve never experienced. It is widely known that sitting for long periods is not good for one’s body. In fact, you can feel it when you stand after a long day at work or a car ride. Go to any major rest stop and you will see most people slowly pouring themselves out of their vehicles followed by ample stretching. However, the ways in which lack of movement affects our mental state are often overlooked and that is where we may be paying the ultimate price.⁣⁣⁣⁣

A 2015 study done in the UK confirmed that sedentary time was associated with greater mental distress. A similar study in 2020 produced the same results. Anecdotally and statistically, as the world has moved to remote work over the past two years, the rates of mental health concerns have increased. Luckily, the fix is incredibly simple; get moving! ⁣⁣

Five tips you can use this winter:⁣⁣

  • ⁣Practice the 30-minute rule. Stand up and move around for 1 minute every 30 minutes of sitting.⁣⁣
  • Walk. It is associated with a number of benefits, more than we can list here!⁣⁣
  • Start to pay attention to your body, what movements feel good? Try Tai Chi, the practice of slow intentional movements.
  • Yoga is a wonderful way to engage your body and your Vagus nerve (and we know how much that helps!)⁣⁣
